Department of Transportation Report on Web-Based Training

A recent Department of Transportation (DOT) report funded by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) presented an evaluation of current state-of-the-art of Web-based Instruction (WBI). WBI has been shown to be effective in a wide variety of settings, both inside and outside the Government. The study concludes that WBI provides a delivery method where costs and time can be significantly reduced as personnel can access training materials online and new information can be updated easily and efficiently. Evidence also suggests that technology-based instruction, including WBI, is less costly and potentially more effective than traditional instructional methods when developed by staff experienced in the design of online training.
